Sportsperson of the year award

Our very own Rosie Rudin was named Sportsperson of the Year in the 2013 Nottingham Post Student Awards presented last week; Rosie also scooped the Student of the Year award.

For the record, Rosie swims 40 miles a week in 10 2-hour sessions and 4 land training sessions at NOVA. She gets up at 5am every day, still manages to keep up with her school work and is predicted to get high grades in her GCSEs next summer. She was the youngest GB squad member at the European Junior Swimming Champs in Poland this year. Rosie also turns out to swim for CABSC when she can.

Rosie is a fantastic role model for all of our youngsters with Olympic dreams! Congratulations Rosie from us all at CABSC.

Sheffield City Open Meet

CABSC compete at Sheffield City SC Open meet

On Sat 16th Nov, 19 CABSC swimmers made the journey to Ponds Forge swimming centre, Sheffield to compete in the B-grade open meet hosted by Sheffield City S.C., a target meet for SDS and CDS squads, in addition to a few County and JDS swimmers. This was an excellent chance for swimmers to compete at a first class venue with great facilities and for some a first at competing in a long course pool AND a first experience of open meets! Undaunted, the swimmers found a poolside home (and a spot in the balcony above for watching parents!) warmed up and were ready for action.

The events were all 50’s and 100’s of each stroke and we had a selection of swimmers competing from across the squads. The morning session produced some strong swims from the start with PB’s tumbling and some CQT’s achieved, always a challenge in a new environment and particularly on bk when it seems like a long time until the last 5m flags appear! After refuelling at lunch and watching a very impressive training session in the diving pool and a few swimmers off the top boards(!) the afternoon session got underway....more great swims, PB’s and CQT’s and lovely to see some swimmers putting training tips into action, working hard underwater at the start and getting the head down to finish last 5m.

Medals were awarded for top 6 places and went to the following swimmers:

Boys: 9 yrs – Will Parker 3rd 50 Br; 10yrs – Tom Giles 2nd 50 bk, 5th 50 fr, Seb Brett 2nd 50 fr, Will Halstead 2nd 100 fr, 3rd 50 fly, 2nd 100 bk, 1st 50 br; Jamie Lodge 2nd 50 fly, 3rd 100 bk; 11yrs – Fabio Medri – 2nd 50 fr, 5th 50 br. Special mention to Will Parker who went so fast on his 50fr that he achieved a speeding ticket!!

Girls: 9 yrs – Lottie Farley – 5th 50 br; 12 yrs Kelsey Giles – 6th 100 fr, 5th 50 fly; 15/over – Becca Schinagl – 4th 50 fly, 3rd 50 bk.

Whatever the result, everyone tried their best and the times achieved proved this and showed the benefits from the hard work put in during training sessions. The swimmers represented CABSC proudly, enjoyed seeing their names and times appear on the giant scoreboard and showed themselves to be a great supportive team with the more experienced meet-goers making sure the younger ones were doing swim downs, snacking and keeping hydrated between swims!

Thanks to Julie for help poolside and to all parents who made the journey and supported enthusiastically. Overall CABSC were placed 7th out of 22 visiting clubs at the meet so fantastic team effort all round, leaving a very proud (& tired!) squad coach.
